Dreak Announces Secord Annunal Ovo Fest

Drake Pic
Despite his status as a rookie artist, Drake proved that he could party like a hip hop heavyweight last year by throwing his very own music festival: OVO Fest, named after his October's Very Own posse. The one-day celebration attracted some impressive special guests to the Young Money rapper's native Toronto, including Eminem and Jay-Z. This year Drizzy is back at it. The rap star announced the second annual OVO fest will be held on July 31st at Molson Amphitheater in T.dot. Performers expected to join Drake on stage include, Rick Ross and the budding R&B sensation, The Weekend. Drizzy promises special guests will be stopping by this time, as well. BEYONCE

American Idol" pulled out all the stops for last night's [May 25] finale including a pair of special performances.   Introduced by Lil Jon, the two remaining members, T-Boz and Chilli, of the R&B group TLC delivered a rare performance of their classics "No Scrubs" and "Waterfalls." Also, Beyoncé, enveloped in smoke and red lights, dazzled the audience with a special treat, the debut of her her new song, a sultry love ballad "1+1."   Bey recently revealed the track listing for her forthcoming album 4 to include: "I Care," "I Miss You," "Best Thing I Never Had," "Party" (featuring Andre 3000), "Rather Die Young," "Start Over," "Love on Top," "Countdown," "End of Time," "I Was Here," and the albums first single "Run the World (Girls)" according to MTV.   "1+1" is the second official single off 4, which hits stores June 28. Eminem Lawsuit

responds to Audi found itself in a bit of hot water after an advertisement for the company's new A6 used Eminem's song "Lose Yourself" allegedly without permission. The ad, which aired only in Europe, appeared to be directly influenced by Eminem's popular Superbowl spot for Chrysler that used the same song. Now Audi has released a statement distancing itself from the controversy by claiming, somewhat cryptically, that the ad in question isn't actually an ad at all. "The video referred to is not an advertisement," a representative for Audi said in a statement according to Allhiphop.com. "Also, this does not involve Audi of America. The video was not shown here in the U.S." Audi's claims will no doubt figure into the company's pending legal defense at the regional court in Hamburg, Germany where Eminem's publishing company, Eight Mile Style, is pursuing its copyright infringement lawsuit. Audi has recently been forced to cease airing the "non-advertisement. Areme-007

Ja Rule

Ja Rule is headed to prison on Wednesday to begin a 2-year sentence, but he wont be delivering the going away present he once promised fans. Producer and longtime Ja collaborator 7 Aurelius recently announced that Pain Is Love 2, the sequel to the former Murder Inc. rapper's 2001 triple-platinum release, won't be released the day before he heads of to prison as planned. Aurelius explains that Ja wasn't able to finish the album to his satisfaction by deadline. "The plan changed mostly because of the level and quality of the records we were making," he told MIO. "We have exhausted every possible way to have it available on iTunes for pre-order on the 7th." Aurelius said Fontana Distribution, the company set to release PIL2 needed the completed album 60 days in advance, but Ja wanted to keep working on making improvements. "If we had stopped in April just to be able to turn it in to Fontana for a June 7 date, PIL2 would not be what it is now," he said. "[It's his] most provocative and his most personal album to date." There's no word on when PIL2 will actually be ready for primetime, but the producer said Fontana was willing to put it on a "fast track" in order to get it to fans as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Ja Rule recently spoke to TMZ about what he plans to do to keep busy while behind bars. The rapper said he wants to write a book, get his GED and possibly learn to play an instrument. Recently, Ja said he wanted to go on a world tour that would start the day he gets out of prison. In December 2010, Ja Rule was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to gun possession charges. He was arrested in 2007 after a concert in New York. Areme-007

Lil Wayne Rick Ross Lead a cast of stars at Summer jam 2011

The stars came out to shine at summer Jam 2011. Every year the annual hip hop concert, hosted by NYC radio station Hot 97, provides fans with an opportunity to see the music industry's biggest stars. This year, 60,000 fans at a sold-out New Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, saw some of music's top talent make their return to the Summer Jam stage after missing the action in previous years.   The most explosive moment of the night came when Lil Wayne and Rick Ross joined forces to rock a series of smash singles they have together. Backed by a live band, the Young Money boss returned to the Summer Jam stage after missing last year's show due to his incarceration at New York's Rikers Island Correctional Facility. Weezy thanked fans for showing him support while he was locked up and treated them to a memorable performance. Throughout his set Wayne brought out members of his Young Money roster, including Cory Gunz, who performed their hit single "6 Foot, 7 Foot." When YM hitmaker Drake graced the stage to perform the Wayne-assisted "Miss Me," the crowd got to witness the duo's first Summer Jam performance together.   The show's closer, Rick Ross, joined Weezy and Drake for a heavyweight performance of DJ Khaled's summer anthem "I'm on One," which features all three chart-topping artists. Rather than leave after his set, Weezy stuck around to trade bars with Ross on their collaborative singles, Wayne's "John," the Bawse's "9 Piece (Remix)," and Ace Hood's "Hustle Hard." New York natives Diddy and Jadakiss also joined the Ross performance. Fellow New Yorkers Dipset (Cam'ron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana, Freeky Zeeky) also made an impressive return to Summer Jam. This was the group's first performance since reuniting last year following a messy breakup in 2008. The rowdy set included guest spots from Atlanta reps Waka Flocka Flame and Travis Porter. For R&B fans, Chris Brown made a triumphant return to the hip hop showcase. The "Deuces" singer hasn't been at the event since 2007, and that fact wasn't lost on him as he let fans know they were "the best crowd" he's ever had. Brown's electric performance was capped by a performance of his smash single "Look at Me Now" as he was joined by energy god Busta Rhymes. Other notable perfomances throughout the night included Fabolous, Wiz Khalifa and Lloyd Banks, who brought out Ryan Leslie, Swizz Beatz and Mobb Deep. Areme-007

Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill made a special announcement Saturday night, June 4, at her concert in Detroit's Chene Park. The platinum-selling artist told fans she was pregmamt with her sixth child.   This comes to no one's surprise though, as she's been walking around sporting a telling baby bump. However, this is the first time the mother of five publicly confirmed her latest pregnancy. Two months ago the former Fugees star joked with fans at a show in Los Angeles, telling the audience, "I keep having these children. I don't know if I'm the most fertile woman in America."   Hill and boyfriend Rohan Marley, son of reggae legend Bob Marley, are already raising children Zion David-Nesta Marley, Selah Marley, Joshua Marley, John Marley and Sarah Marley.   No word on when the baby is due, but Hill is ending her tour to make time to give birth. She's still expected to appear at scheduled Rock the Bells dates in Los Angeles (August 20), San Francisco (August 27) and New York (September 3). Areme-007

IT TOOK ME YEARS TO BUILD THIS NAME;I DID NOT DO ANY COLLAB WITH DBANJ.TOPE ALABI

Lately, we’ve seen many gospel artistes working with secular artistes which in some cases don’t display love or knowledge of Christ in their music.
Some weeks back, news broke out that gospel Singer Tope Alabi is planning to collaborate with Dbanj. But in a recent interview with Tribune journal; she debunked the insinuation about her collaboration with Dbanj in an album. She said and I quote
I sings undiluted gospel music and "this inform the acceptance of my albums by everybody in the society, both home and abroad"

"This is not true and I want to assure my fans that I still remain focused in my music career. It took me years to build this name and I don't pray to derail from this calling. I did not do any collabo with any singer in another genre of music. My music is basically gospel and I’ll remain a gospeller,” she said.
And that brings me back to the main issue. Is it a fair game or foul play for gospel artistes to collaborate with secular artistes?

NAW Mag - "You've been linked romantically to several people, are there any wedding bells in the future?"
Genny - "Yes, I am dating. But there won't be any chiming of any wedding bells, although I want to get married. I am looking for someone who can keep me excited because I get easily bored. I need someone who is there to support me, who is confident. Anyone who's with me needs to be confident. I haven't got time to be massaging any man's ego. My ideal man is someone with a Johnny Depp personality and with Boris Kodjo's lip (laughs)." Genevieve said in her interview with New African Woman magazine.
Me I want a man with Vin Diesel's voice, Vin Diesel's body, Vin Diesel's lips, Vin Diesel's personality, Vin Diesel's...I want Vin Diesel period! lol

Why did Basketmouth slap his fan?

Basketmouth What would have made Bright Akpocha, the famous humour merchant popularly known as Basket mouth, slap one of his numerous fans in public?
Basket mouth was gathered to have thrown decorum to the dustbin at Ecstasy Nite Club, Wuse 2, the venue of one of the ‘AY Shows’ after party in Abuja, sometimes ago. At the party, SS reliably gathered that numerous fans of Basket mouth swooped down on him like bees to honey, to have a photograph session. The happy fans got the surprise of their lives, when ‘Basketmouth’ in commando like resisted any form of association with the yelling fans. It was at this point that one popular Abuja based DJ walked up to Basketmouth to register his displeasure with the way the Glo Ambassador treated his fans and before one could understand what transpired between Basketmouth and the DJ, Basketmouth’s heavy slap was alleged to have landed on the guy’s face! It took the intervention of AY, the organiser, to calm down the angry fans, who were on the verge of tearing Basketmouth into pieces.
While some close aides of Basketmouth blamed his aggression on the swear words used by the slapped DJ, many people believe that Basketmouth would have handled the situation maturely and not stoop so low to have publicly slapped a fan not to even talk of a colleague in showbiz. One begins to wonder what would happen to Basketmouth if he does that to a Lagos based DJ or to a no-nonsense fan in Lagos.

Big birthday bash for Real Groovy

real groovy

A lot has happened in the last 30 years of music.
Michael Jackson hit the charts, albums were on vinyl then on cassette then on CD then on iPods then back on vinyl, Michael Jackson discovered hair straighteners, Beyonce proved dancing in your togs is acceptable, and Michael Jackson died.
But there has been one constant: Auckland's Real Groovy Records is celebrating its 30th birthday this weekend with a true rock and roll party.
As one of the longest-running music retailers in the country, Real Groovy has cemented itself as the go-to Auckland destination for every type of take-home entertainment possible.
Real Groovy became a cultural destination.
Owner Chris Hart opened the store in 1981 in Mt Eden, not far from its current location on Queen St.
And over the past 30 years, the independent store combined trading second-hand products, an import service, concert ticket sales, books and merchandise to stay afloat in an ever-changing music industry.
In 2008 the chain, which included stores in Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, went into receivership after what Hart called "a bad foreign exchange deal" that left the business in need of capital.
The receivers closed the Dunedin store, put the business up for sale and the Wellington and Christchurch stores were bought by their managers, while Hart and his partner Marty O'Donnell bought the Auckland store, bringing Ralph Brayham on board.
Now, three years after the sale, the Auckland store is the only one left standing - Wellington shut its doors yesterday and the Christchurch store was closed permanently after being damaged in the February earthquake.
But it's no longer just records that make the money. In an effort to keep overheads down, the Queen Street building is now shared with a vintage clothing store, a cafe and a hi fi electronics store, and according to Hart, there are more tenants on their way.
"The model for a half-acre record store no longer exists.  We are actively gathering complementary businesses around us to preserve Real Groovy's value as a destination."
It's this feeling of Real Groovy as a destination that has attracted some well-known customers along the way.
"We have had a lot of people through," confirms Hart, including names like Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, Morrissey and Metallica.
But what Hart describes as "possibly the single best moment" came recently when his son Humphrey - a keen guitarist - was working behind the counter and got to serve Carlos Santana.
"He was too awestruck to notice what he bought though."
Hart says getting the chance to connect with musical idols is a unique perk of the job.
"It's nice to chat to people who were friends with Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. Because growing up listening to them, there was an obvious divide, you felt far away. But then they are here, and they are just normal people."
He says it has been the support of well-known and local customers that have kept his store alive and kicking for so long.
"Real Groovy couldn't have existed if it hadn't been for the support of our customers over the years. While Auckland was the ideal size for a single deep-catalogue music store, as opposed to the range of specialist stores found in larger metropolises, it was the embrace of our customers that enabled us to grow and develop into a world-class music haven."
This weekend Hart, his team and hundreds of loyal fans will be celebrating Real Groovy's 30 years in style, with live performances from bands including Tono and the Finance Company, F in Math and The Broadsides, as well as giveaways and in-store specials.
And Hart says there is every chance the store will be around for another 30 years.
"When we started Real Groovy I must admit that I wasn't thinking about where we would be in 30 years' time. It's been a fantastic ride, with plenty more ups than downs.
"I'm excited to see what shape Real Groovy will take in the coming decades."

Lady Gaga makes love to her songs

gaga

Lady Gaga has revealed she makes love to her songs.
The eccentric superstar considers the tracks on her new album Born This Way to be cathartic, a sonic process of transformation. Gaga put everything she had into writing and recording the music and made sure every word was something to remember.
"I licked and touched and kissed and made love to every single note and melody and lyric on that album," Gaga tells Us Weekly.
Riding high on the successful recent release of her new record, Gaga is proud of what she has achieved. She was closely involved with every stage of putting the album together and each track has a special meaning for her.
"There is not one song on any of my records that wasn't written by me," Gaga explained. "I think when you write your own music you find ways to reinvent [the songs] emotionally through yourself and performances that they are different every night."
Gaga is eager to share this ongoing process of transformation with her fans.
"Truthfully, the greatest accomplishment in my career thus far is that I truly have a genuine, authentic, and beautiful relationship with little monsters," she added. "That makes it all worth it."

Coldplay change image before shows

coldplaqy

Coldplay have unveiled a new image ahead of the release of a new single and album.
The British rock band's last record Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends hit stores in 2008. They dressed as French revolutionaries to promote the album, wearing smart jackets with brass buttons.
Their as-yet-untitled fifth record is due to be available later this year  and the group have decided to jazz up their look again.
Having previously explained their new sound is inspired by New York graffiti, the group have taken to wearing relaxed jackets, bright T-shirts and carrying around cans of spray paint.
Frontman Chris Martin has undergone a particular style overhaul. Gone are his curly locks, and in place is a smart, slicked-back style.
Their new look was unveiled as the band announced the first single from the new LP will be available from this Friday. It's called Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, and the group made the revelationon their website.
"We're about to play a bunch of summer festivals so it's as good a time as any to put out a new song," wrote drummer Will Champion.
The artwork for the release includes a lot of neon, which has been sprayed onto a wall which forms the backdrop of the single's sleeve.
Last year, Chris discussed how different the group's latest album was going to be. He's been spending a lot of time in New York with his wife Gwyneth Paltrow and their kids, which has inspired him.
"The ideas come from the New York graffiti art of the 70s. I've spent a lot of my life playing it a bit safe or conforming to something, even though I didn't agree with it," he explained.
"So I have respect and admiration for people who don't."

Justin Bieber, Chris Brown Set To Shoot ‘Next 2 You’ Video

Chris Brown recently took the stage with Justin Bieber during the Biebs’ tour stop in Australia, where they performed “Up,” and now the two will begin work on a video for Brown’s F.A.M.E. track “Next 2 You.”
Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, confirmed the video plans on Twitter. “NP- #Next2You w/ @justinbieber and @chrisbrown – video treatment is crazy … yeah it’s coming!!” he wrote.
With little known about what these two have in store for fans, MTV News spoke to Brownin March about working with the teen star on the track. “Being able to collab with [Bieber] was great,” Brown said. “He’s a young, energetic cat, so being able to work with him, with the fanbase he has, was incredible. I know a lot of little girls are going to love this record.
“I wouldn’t say [he's] my protégé. He’s doing his thing at a young age, and I was doing mine at a young age, so being able to see him come up is dope.”
The midtempo ballad is about the power of love and making the pledge to spend your life with that special someone. The chorus says, “One day when the sky is fallin’/ I’ll be standing right next to you, right next to you/ Nothing will ever come between us/ ‘Cause I’ll be standing right next to you, right next to you.”
While it’s a feel-good track, Brown joked that when recording the song, he missed his chance to hit the studio with Bieber. “I actually stood him up on accident,” Brown recalled. “He was kind of mad … I was all the way on the other side of town handling some business, ‘girl business,’ and I was rushing back, and by that time, he’s like, ‘Man, I’m leaving, bro. I did it — just check it out.’ And I looked at it and listened to it and I was like, ‘Man, this is crazy.’ … He’s a great kid.”

Chuckie Will Debut Michael Jackson Remix In Miami

Official ‘Hollywood Tonight’ remix coming to Miami Music Week.
By Akshay Bhansali

Photo: Jason Ano/ One and Only Productions
Leaving the South by Southwest festival, Lavo New York and Las Vegas’ Marquee in his wake, house DJ Chuckie has his sights set on the week ahead. With Miami Music Week now upon us, Chuckie plans to seize the opportunity to debut new material. Fans will be tickled to know the Dutch producer has tracks in the can with Kelly Rowland and T-Pain, but when MTV News caught up with him Friday in New York, Chuckie shared the achievement of which he’s most proud.
“I did a Michael Jackson remix, which was really scary — to touch Michael Jackson vocals,” Chuckie said. “I did this remix for this track ‘Hollywood Tonight.’ I couldn’t say it for a minute: The label called me, and they said, ‘You can’t say nothing about this. It’s kind of a secret project.’ It’s gonna come out anytime now.”
“Hollywood Tonight” was originally produced by Teddy Riley for Jackson’s posthumousMichael album, and Chuckie’s mix of the song will be the sole official remix of the track.
“I will play it Miami,” Chuckie revealed. “I told them this is the best week to launch the remix. So it feels really good. I’m the only one remixing that Michael Jackson track, and they are considering it a single. For me, especially, it’s an honor to remix the King of Pop because he died on my birthday.”
So, will the mix be a thundering Chuckie Dutch house banger or will it have a melodic progressive house feel, like his Marquee remix of Diddy-Dirty Money’s “I Hate That You Love Me”? Well, according to the “Let the Bass Kick” producer, fans will be getting a healthy dose of both.
“I had to bring in the raucous,” Chuckie confessed. “Yeah, I did the Chuckie flavor, but then again, I wanted to make it really musical, so I went progressive (house) on it.”
Chuckie will be performing twice at Miami Music Week: at the Cr2 Records Party at Wall Lounge on Wednesday, and then headlining “No Sugar Added” at Nikki Beach on Friday.

Weird Al" says Lady Gaga has "rocked the zeitgest"

DETROIT (Billboard) – "Weird Al" Yankovic says he has no hard feelings toward Lady Gaga over the struggle to release "Perform This Way," his parody of her hit "Born This Way."
The pop singer's manager had initially refused permission for Yankovic to release "Perform This Way," but Yankovic says things changed once Gaga herself heard the song.
"Even though her manager was presenting it as such, she had never once approached Gaga, so it was news to her when people were ... asking, 'How come you're not letting Weird Al do his parody?'" Yankovic told Billboard.com. "She was not aware of it at all, and when she actually did hear the song she loved it and gave me permission."
He added, "This is unfortunately not an isolated incident over the course of my career...I find it's better, whenever possible, to go directly to an artist and deal with them personally, but as it turns out I didn't happen to have Lady Gaga's home phone number or e-mail address."
Yankovic did hasten the process by posting the song on YouTube during the negotiations -- but only, he says, because it was the first time a manager had insisted on hearing an actual recording rather than simply reviewing a lyric sheet.
"I'd never done that before," he said. "I figured if you already have the lyrics, if you don't find those offensive then you're not going to find it offensive when you hear the fully produced version of it -- which is why I was kind of knocked for a loop when the answer we got back was 'no.'"
Now, however, the battle is history. Yankovic is a Gaga fan -- "I think she's a huge talent -- a great songwriter and a wonderful performer..." -- and the Gaga camp also gave him permission to use her "Poker Face" in a medley called "Polka Face" that appears on his new album "Alpocalypse," sue out June 21.
"Perform This Way" gave him a hook on which to hang the new album.
"I had the 11 other tracks in the can for close to a year," Yankovic said, "and I was waiting for the right lead-off single. I've come to learn over the course of my career that my albums are more successful if they are released concurrently with a single that's very topical and maybe celebrates a pop culture event of serious magnitude. I thought that Lady Gaga, and specifically her new album and single, was a sufficiently large event. I thought Gaga had sufficiently rocked the zeitgeist enough for me to make that choice."
The album also includes parodies of Taylor Swift's "You Belong With Me" ("TMZ"), Miley Cyrus' "Party in the U.S.A." ("Party in the CIA," also timely in the wake of the Osama Bin Laden assassination), B.o.B's "Nothin' On You" ("Another Tattoo") and T.I.'s "Whatever You Like," with the same title. Yankovic also recorded stylistic homages to the White Stripes ("CNR"), Queen ("Ringtone") and the Doors ("Craigslist," with the group's Ray Manzarek guesting on keyboards).
Yankovic is currently on the road and plans to spend most of the rest of the year touring. The new material is gradually being worked into the set, he added. "This tour was booked before I knew I'd have an album coming out, so I had a lot of things thrown in my lap at once. We're still trying to work things out."

Rihanna defends video, says victims need a voice

NEW YORK – Rihanna is defending her latest music video, which opens with a man being shot in the head.
"Man Down," which premiered Tuesday on BET, is a song about a girl who shoots her abuser in public. The video also portrays sexual assault.
On Tuesday, the Parents Television Council called the clip "disturbing" and asked BET to stop airing it.
But on Thursday's "106 & Park," BET's music video countdown show, Rihanna said the video is "art with a message."
"We just wanted to hone in on a very serious matter that people are afraid to address, especially if you've been victimized in this scenario," Rihanna said.
BET says it will continue to play the video, explaining that the network "has a comprehensive set of standards and guidelines that are applied to all of our content" and that Rihanna's video "complied with these guidelines and was approved for air."
MTV hasn't played the video. A MTV representative said they're "in the process of reviewing the video."
Rihanna, who was attacked by then-boyfriend Chris Brown in February 2009, says she doesn't agree with violence.
Brown attacked Rihanna on the eve of the Grammys two years ago. He pleaded guilty to a felony and was sentenced to five years' probation.
"I've been abused in the past and you don't see me running around killing people in my spare time," she said.
But the 23-year-old says rape happens too often and those victims need a voice.
"If I can be a voice for so many that aren't heard, then I win twice," she said.
The "Man Down" clip was directed by Anthony Mandler, who has directed other Rihanna videos.
The Grammy winner says she didn't intend to make a controversial music video. She was hoping to display her acting skills and create "something raw and artistic."
The video for "Man Down" has not yet appeared on iTunes. A rep for iTunes said that decision is up to the label.
An email seeking comment from Rihanna's record label went unreturned Thursday.

Usher's Three-year-old Son Sets His Sights on Ducati Motorbike

0306N.STORY-2.jpg - 0306N.STORY-2.jpg

Daily Mail
It looks like Usher's young son is already getting a taste for life in the fast lane. Little Usher Raymond V was spotted with his RnB star father in West Hollywood today - and was quickly distracted by the sight of a bright red Ducati motorbike.
The three-year-old couldn't resist getting his hands on the motor, as his daddy watched on smiling.
Usher was joined by his Godfather, 64-year-old Ben Vereen, who was bizarrely dressed in a priest outfit.
The trio enjoyed the sunny California weather and headed to Real Food Daily, a super healthy cafe selling vegan and vegetarian dishes.
OMG star Usher also has a two-year-old son, Naviyd Eli Raymond. Both children are from his previous relationship with former wife Tameka Foster.
He filed for divorce in June 2009, citing irreconcilable differences, claiming they had lived apart for over a year. The couple's divorce was then finalised in November 2009

Amazon's gamble gives Lady Gaga 1M in album sales

NEW YORK – Lady Gaga sold more than 1.1 million copies of her new album "Born This Way" and set a digital sales record last week — with an assist from Amazon.com.
Billboard announced Tuesday that "Born This Way" debuted at No. 1 on its Billboard 200 album chart, becoming just the 17th album to sell a million copies in its first week since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991 and the top-selling digital debut.
The dance pop provocateur is just the fifth female with a an album that sold more than a million copies in the SoundScan era.
Lady Gaga's first No. 1 album sold the most copies of any debut since March 2005 when 50 Cent's "The Massacre" sold 1.14 million. The last million-selling album was Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" in November.
Amazon's attention-grabbing download price of 99 cents last Tuesday and Thursday helped drive "Born This Way" to an unprecedented 662,000 in digital sales, pushing the album to nearly three times initial estimates by Universal Music Group. Amazon sold more than 440,000 of those copies alone, but with mixed results.
The online retailer did grab the spotlight it had hoped in its battle for a larger piece of the online market, which is dominated by Apple's iTunes. But it came with an image hit when customers overwhelmed Amazon's system.
Amazon's move has been deemed controversial by some observers who say the steep loss of several dollars an album was not worth the investment. Physical outlets also were upset at the advantage given to an online retailer.
Dramatic price cuts are nothing new for Amazon, which regularly trims new and popular album prices to as low as $2.99 through its daily deal program.

Lady Gaga album sells 1.1 million copies in first week

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Flamboyant pop star Lady Gaga has scored her first No. 1 album in the United States after a 99-cent promotion by Amazon.com sent the much-hyped release past the rare million-copy mark in its debut week.
According to sales data published on Tuesday by Billboard magazine, "Born This Way" sold 1.11 million copies during the week ended May 29.
It marks the biggest first-week sales total since rapper 50 Cent's "The Massacre" debuted to 1.14 million copies in March 2005. The last album to break the million mark was country starlet Taylor Swift's "Speak Now," which started with 1.01 million copies last November.
In all, just 17 albums have sold more than one million copies in their first week since tracking firm Nielsen SoundScan began collecting point-of-sales data in 1991. Boy band 'N Sync holds the first-week record with 2.4 million copies for its 2000 album "No Strings Attached."
Billboard estimated that Amazon downloads accounted for upward of 440,000 downloads of "Born This Way." Heavy demand crashed Amazon's servers when the online retailer launched its one-day-only promotion last Monday. The firm gave fans another chance to get the album for 99 cents on Thursday.
Billboard said music industry observers had been expecting the album to sell between 650,000 and 700,000 copies before the Amazon promotion kicked in.
Amazon undertook the money-losing promotion to steal business from Apple Inc's iTunes, which dominates the market for digital music downloads.
Overall digital downloads for "Born This Way" totaled a record-breaking 662,000 copies, Billboard said. The old record of 288,000 downloads was held by Coldplay's 2008 album "Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends."
"Born This Way" marks Lady Gaga's second full-length album for Interscope Records, a unit of Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group. The 25-year-old New Yorker's 2008 debut "The Fame" peaked at No. 2 and has sold 4.2 million copies to date in the United States.
The singer, famed for her outrageous costumes and lavish stage shows, has been ubiquitous on the promotional trail in recent weeks. Among her stops were the Cannes Film Festival in France, the U.S. variety show "Saturday Night Live," and a London newspaper where she served as guest editor.
But is "Born This Way" any good? Critics said it lacked subtlety, but were divided on whether this was a good thing. Rolling Stone described the album as "disarmingly great" while the Los Angeles Times said it draws from "the worst tendencies of the last decade of dance music."

Elton John urges FL gov. to save HIV/AIDS funding

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Singer Elton John is urging Florida Gov. Rick Scott to protect a program that helps low-income HIV/AIDS patients get medication needed to control the virus.
John, founder of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, wrote to Scott on Tuesday after hearing the Department of Health was considering changes in income eligibility.
A department spokeswoman says there are no immediate plans to change the AIDS Drug Assistance Program, though it held hearings to discuss the possibility of lowering income requirements to participate.
In their letter, John and foundation Chairman David Furnish say lowering income eligibility could mean 1,600 people will no longer get help obtaining antiretroviral medication.
