The book is almost closed on the year 2011, and BET.com reached out to some of our favorite
journalists and colorful commentators to reflect on the biggest stories of the year that was.In news that left the world riveted and breathing a long-held sigh of relief, President Barack Obama announced that U.S. forces had captured and killed Osama Bin Laden— the Al Qeada leader and 9/11 mastermind who had been the world's most wanted fugitive for a decade. In a controversial decision by the executive branch, however, photos of the terrorist's body were never released. And how might Bin Laden's death— widely regarded as one of President Obama's signature foreign policy victories— figure into the 2012 presidential race?
"Hopefully this was on a checklist called 'What I Need To Do To Get Re-elected In 2012," says hip hop journalist Alvin Blanco. "Boom: took out Osama Bin Laden— the most wanted man on the planet Earth."
On the culture side of things, one the year's most talked about stories came when Beyoncé and Jay-Zgrabbed headlines with the announcement of the imminent arrival of their first child together. Bey broke the news at the MTV Video Music Awards, which sent the Twitterverse into a tailspin. The news broke records on the micro-blogging service, generating the most tweets per second in the site's history.
"That Beyoncé, she really knows how to upstage everybody, doesn't she?" says Bevy Smith.
