NEW Governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Mukhtar Ramallan Yero, 44, on Sunday eulogised his late predecessor, Patrick Yakowa, describing him as an ‘amiable’ person.
Yero, who was sworn-in at exactly 1.06 pm on Sunday by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Rahila Cudjoe, vowed to consolidate Yakowa’s achievements.
The new governor was appointed commissioner by Vice-President Namadi Sambo, when he was the governor of the state. Yero became the deputy to Yakowa when the latter took over the reins of power from Sambo, who left to be the second-in-command to President Goodluck Jonathan.
Eulogising his late boss, the new governor said, “Our amiable governor, Sir Patrick Yakowa, has suddenly left us by answering the call of our creator. Indeed, from Him (God), we all came and to Him we would all, one day, return. In between these periods is the privilege we have to serve humanity.
“We are living testimonies to the fact that our late amiable governor, Sir Patrick Yakowa, who came and served humanity in diverse positions has suddenly returned to our creator. His humility, dedication to duty, fairness to all and a sense of humour, endeared him to many, near and far, irrespective of religious, tribal or sectional inclinations. No wonder, he was given the pseudo name of ‘Nakowa.’
“The vision of Sir Patrick Yakowa, ‘Nakowa,’ was to secure, unite and develop Kaduna State. He invested so much on this and started reaping the fruits of his labour. He wished to consolidate and advance on the achievements so far made and hence tagged Kaduna State’s 2013 Budget , which he presented to the House of Assembly on Thursday, December 13, 2012, as the “Budget of Consolidation and Advancement.”
“I sincerely desire to build on the good foundation that my boss has laid. I therefore covet your prayers for God’s wisdom, guidance and direction.”
Meanwhile, the pan–northern socio-political organisation, Arewa Consultative Forum, has said its members received the news of the governor’s death with shock and heavy heart.
ACF, in a condolence message by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Anthony Sani, added that the loss was not only to the Yakowa family and associates but to the nation at large.
It described as sad the news about the sudden deaths of Yakowa and a former National Security Adviser, General Andrew Azazi, and four others, in a helicopter crash in Bayelsa State on Saturday.
“The losses are not only to their families and associates but also to their states and the nation, precisely because they have gone at the time their services are needed the most,” the ACF noted.
On his part, the Emir of Zazzau and Chairman, Kaduna State Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Shehu Idris, noted that one of the nation’s finest administrators had gone. He said the late governor would for long be remembered as a distinguished administrator.
The Bishop of the Kafanchan Diocese of the Catholic Church, Joseph Bagobiri, said, “A monumental loss of a gentle, God-fearing and selfless leader who ran an all-inclusive government where no persons were excluded on the basis of religion and ethnicity.”
The state chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria, in its condolence message, said the demise of Yakowa was an unquantifiable loss to lovers of peace and development of the state.
Chairman of the party in the state, Mr. Mohammaed Soba, said that the late governor was one that understood the concept of opposition party and that he was never antagonistic toward the critics of his administration.
Chairman of the Middle Belt Youth Forum, Mr. Jonathan Asake, in his reaction said the late governor was prudent, transparent and humble and that his experience had been brought to bear on the state
Asake, who is also a former Member of the House of Representatives said, “He came to meet a state with a profile of debt and worked hard to make it debt free and was able to embark on projects that have direct bearing on the people of the state.
“For the people of Southern Kaduna, we will miss him a lot because it was a long struggle to have one of our own in Southern Kaduna as governor and that aspiration has vanished. He knew them (Southern Kaduna people) very well and they knew him.
“The state will miss him as a just leader. His exit will no doubt affect the politics of 2015.”
