Russell Simmons Says Hip Hop Homophobia Exaggerated

Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons has advocated for gay rights and against harsh song lyrics, but he recently came to the hip-hop community's defense about homophobia among artists and gay-bashing lyrics.

"I'm not suggesting there's no homophobia. I'm suggesting that homophobia exists everywhere, and it's horrible," he tells XXL Magazine. "I'm saying that hip-hop artists and the hip-hop community, the poetic community, are less homophobic than the rest of society. Whoever you can think of, hip-hop is less."

"If [rappers] use harsh language or say things that exemplify a truth in our sadness, our sickness in our community, that is shocking," he continues. "That's just reality. They're just dealing with what we're just trying to brush under the rug. They're mirrors of our own sickness."

Jay-Z Calls Criticism of Obama "Fair"

Jay-Z's private listening party for his collaborative album with Kanye West, Watch the Throne, took a political turn when the rap legend sounded off on President Obama.

"You gotta fix (the country's current climate). Can't fix it all in one day. Numbers don't lie, it's f***ed up out there," says Jay, indicating rising joblessness (up to 9.2% for the month of June). "Unemployment is still high."

When questioned about his wavering support for the Commander in Chief, who Hova campaigned for in 2008, he responded: "He's the president, it's fair."

Not wanting to let the exclusive event get too serious, he joked that Obama should have let him deliver the news of Osama Bin Laden's death to the American public…the way he would have done it on the street: "He was a threat, you know what I mean?," he mocked in a thick hood accent. "We handled that."

President Obama, we know you have 99 problems, but with an election year coming up losing the support of your A-list followers shouldn't be one.

John Legend Sued for Stealing a Song

John Legend has a reputation as a gentleman, but the acclaimed singer/songwriter has recently been accused of some less-than genteel behavior. Anthony Stokes, a singer based in New Jersey, is suing Legend for copyright infringement, claiming the Grammy winner took advantage of him and stole a song of his for the 2006 album Once Again.

Stokes says he met Legend as a student attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2004. The G.O.O.D. Music crooner was playing a homecoming concert, and Stokes was among a group of fans who stayed after the show to take part in an autograph session. 

Stokes says he gave Legend a demo of his recorded music, including the song "Where Are You Now?" and his contact information. The young artist never heard from Legend, but alleges that the "Ordinary People" singer ripped off "Where Are You Now?" two years later with the song "Maxine's Interlude," which appears on Legend's 2006 album Once Again.

To lay ears, the two songs appear to bear little in common, compositionally, but both contain the refrain "Where Are You Now?" 

Stokes says he registered his song with the United States Copyright Office back in 2004. It is unclear why he waited five years after the release of Legend's album to file his lawsuit.

Filed in court July 5, the suit includes photos of Stokes's meeting with Legend and seeks compensation for damages as well as a portion of profits and publishing. Stokes also seeks an injunction barring the sale ofOnce Again until the suit is settled.

Jill Scott No Longer Celibate

Brothers, rejoice! R&B songstress Jill Scott is giving up her vow of celibacy, opting for a "fifth date" rule instead. The singer tells Us Weekly that she's ready to embrace her carnal side after a self-imposed break: "The whole celibacy thing, you could throw that out the window. That's over."

But Miss Scott claims her self-denial phase taught her a lot of lessons, and she now opts to take things a lot slower with new men in her life.  She says, "I don't have physical intimacy until at least the fifth date. So I can get to know who I'm dealing with and they can get to know me. It just gives me a chance to get to know the person." 

Jill says she's on the lookout for a serious relationship after splitting with her ex, drummer Lil' John Roberts, with whom she has a one-year-old son Jett: "I'm a single girl in the world, but if I don't have some standards then I can be making the same mistakes that I made in the past. Uche Jumbo may be edging closer with a new engagement ring

Rumored allegations have been making rounds regarding Uche Jumbo’s relationship with Nigerian soccer star Ikechukwu Uche. And the news has notched up further with emerging possibilities about an engagement that’s already a done deal and a wedding which may be in the offing soon.

Nollywood actor Jibola Dabor explains his gigolo movie roles

Jibola Dabor has remained an underdog, mostly making succinct appearances in select movies and sometimes causing uproars by the raw untamed nature of his acts, and example of which is the sequential movies “LITTLE SECRET” and “DIRTY SECRET.” In a recent interview he granted however, Jibola talks about his roles in movies and more:
What role are you most comfortable with?

I am comfortable with any role. If you watch my movies, I have played a poor man, a king, a married man, an Alhaji, a gigolo. I am comfortable with any role any character.

What are the factors you put into consideration before accepting a script?

I think I take the message very serious because the world of an actor is like a gospel, people that are watching will believe what you tell them. I don’t want to pass the wrong message. It is like reading a book. Especially children, they easily believe what they see.So,I consider the message, what I want to pass across.

I also consider the culture, the importance of my character. I might not like the character that much but if the message is okay by me,I can take it. There was a movie I was to act as a warlord, I didn’t really like that character but because of the message, I accepted the movie. That is the kind of actor that I am.

You like taking up kissing roles, why?

I will say yes and no.Yes, in the sense that I am a man who loves a lot.However,you have to know that I did not cast myself in these roles. The producers, directors or even the casting director cast people who they believe can play a particular role better. By my status, I no longer go for audition, they invite me. After writing a story and going through it, the producers will look for someone who can play the role.So,I will be invited. I don’t go there to say I want to act a role. That is not how it works.Somebody will cast the role, it doesn’t mean that is what I like to do, it is a role I was given to play.

It seems most producers call you for kissing roles?

Whatever their reason is, I don’t know (laughs).

But do you enjoy such roles?

I do,I do.

Really?

I enjoy other roles too. Nothing comes out of it. If I enjoy those roles, it is because of the interaction with the people on set. There are sometimes that your spirit does not go well with those you want to kiss.

In situations like that, when your spirit does not go with someone you want to kiss, would you drop the role?

As an actor, what I do in such situation is to become the character and stop being myself. It is me who doesn’t go with that person but the character is different from me, so I have to become the character.
In real life, some ladies that I have kissed on set are people who I wouldn’t have moved close to, not to talk of kissing them. Not because they are not beautiful but because they don’t interest me. But as an actor, I have to become such character.

Do you get sexually excited when acting love scenes?

(Laughs) maybe it happens to some people but let me tell you a scenario why it is impossible to get sexually excited. In that room where you are trying to kiss, there are a lot of people there.

There is somebody holding a microphone above your head so that they can hear your voices, there are about four lights there with you, you have the cameraman there, the director, the continuity guy with the tracker board. They are all there watching.

So, you can’t get excited it is even very difficult to get sexually excited. There are so many people there. So it is not possible.

Most of your love scenes are done alongside Tonto Dikeh, why?

Those things you watch in movies is a kind of fraud Nigerian producers do to actors. All the movies I have done with Tonto Dikeh shouldn’t be more than one or two movies. When producers get on set, we shoot a lot of scenes and they tell us it part 1,2,3,4.Later you will start seeing another movie with the same scene we acted and they will give it different names.

So, why do producers pair the two of you in love scenes?

That is for our producers to answer. But all producers will look for the best person to play their role. A lot of people come for auditioning; they will pick the best person for the role.
It is not my doing.

You don’t feature in Yoruba movies like before, why?

I still feature in Yoruba movies; it is just that I am busy now with English movies. English movie producers notify us on time ahead of time, so it is more difficult for Yoruba movie producers to get me.

Arnie wants his movie career back

Scandal-plagued star Arnold Schwarzenegger is desperate to finalise his divorce so he can throw himself back into acting.

The star's estranged wife Maria Shriver filed to end their 25-year marriage last week. Their split came after Arnold told her he had fathered a child with a member of their household staff over a decade ago.

It's been known for some time that Arnold is keen to return to his acting roots. His tenure as Governor of California ended in January, and there were rumours he was hoping to appear in a new Terminator movie.

He was also said to have signed on to play a horse breeder in Cry Macho, though shortly after that news broke it was announced he was putting his acting plans on hold to concentrate on his personal issues.

Now he's had time to be with his family and Maria has filed for divorce, the action hero is keen to get things settled and move on with his life.

"Arnold wants to be back on a set making movies, make no bones about that. He wants to put this chapter of his life behind him, and make hit movies," a source told RadarOnline.com.

"Arnold has been talking to studio executives about his comeback. He wants to star with Tom Arnold in a possible True Lies sequel. Both actors are trying to make that happen. The script has been written, it's just a matter of lining up a director, the primary choice would be James Cameron because he did the first one."

In 1994 movie True Lies, Arnold played a man who lived a double life and had to keep it secret from his family.

Maria is said to be completely supportive of Arnold's career decision and would love to see him making films again. She's also hopeful they will be able to sort things out quickly and amicably so he can realise his dream.

"Maria is fully supportive of Arnold returning to acting. She knows how much it means to him," the insider added.

Michael Jackson's secret art fortune

Michael Jackson reportedly had a $900 million art collection that has recently been unearthed.

Star magazine has revealed the almost-billion-dollar haul is in the middle of a legal fight after it emerged it was being sold off for $87.7 million to an unknown businessman without the consent of the singer's family.

The late star's estate is trying to block the sale to ensure the fortune is passed down to Jackson's three children; Prince, 13, Paris, 12, and Blanket, eight.

According to Star, an appraisal of the 182 pieces of the "rare intact major collection" was valued at $902.52 million with "an invaluable pedigree for future sales in the international market".

The haul also includes original art pieces by Jackson himself, as well as a rocking chair made by one of John F Kennedy's White House staffers for the president's use in the Oval Office, proving the singer had many valuables that were never previously disclosed.

Australian painter Brett-Livingstone Strong was a close friend of Jackson and is said to have taught him a great deal about art.

MUSICIAN TIMAYA JILTS ABUJA LOVER OVER LOSS OF PREGNANCY

While some stars try so hard to stay away from controversies, some are busy swimming in it. One of the people in the latter group is Timaya, the self acclaimed Egberi Papa 1 of Bayelsa.
The crooner who many thought was warming up to settle down following his controversial breakup with actress Empress Njamah sometime last year, has this time given birth to another controversial surprise.

Just recently, rumour swirled round the industry about Timaya's romance with an alleged Abuja lover who it was said is pregnant for him.

According to the report, Timaya was full of joy when the news reached him and even started spreading the good news as an expectant father. He even declared his intention to allegedly marry the lover.

An impeccable source informed us that the plantain boy, as Timaya is fondly called, recently dumped the girl.

According to the source, his reason is that she lost the pregnancy few weeks after. And Timaya,we learnt,got furious about the whole thing, referring to her as bad luck for allegedly losing his first baby.

We also learnt that the message sent to Timaya on his Blackberry messenger was the result of the pregnancy scan that revealed the baby's identity as a boy, which was the real reason he allegedly asked her to keep the pregnancy.

As the story goes, it was gathered that Bisi Komolafe who cut her teeth as an apprentice with the Odunfa caucus of the industry had caught the fancy of Chairman and one thing led to another and they started dating.

The relationship, according to those in the know, lasted for several years. Along the line,Bisi decided to call off the relationship and this, we learnt,did not go down well with Chairman who felt hurt and slighted that she was the one who pulled out without him giving her the boot.

What people say really hurt Yinka is the fact that Bisi dumped him for an Idumota based marketer, Olasco who they said gave her money to produce her movie, Oka.So bitter is Yinka Quadri that, according to those close to him, has promised to haunt and frustrate Bisi out of the industry.

And being that Yinka is one of the voices that carry a lot of weight in the Yoruba movie industry, insiders believe that the young lady really has bitten more than she can chew. It is generally believed that whatever he says is law as he runs the most formidable caucus in the industry.

Our source informs that Yinka Quadri has been calling producers and instructing them not to invite Bisi to their location especially if he is to feature in the movie.

But one person that is really aggrieved over this matter is star actress Bukky Wright.

According to insiders who should know, at a recent movie location, the issue between Bisi and Yinka was discussed and our source said Bukky was really annoyed at the turn out of things and wondering if Bisi was Yinka's wife that he should want to stop her from acting by all means.

She was said to be furious and angry that Yinka who has a daughter of Bisi's age should be all out to frustrate her in such a manner as if she is the only girl in the industry or even in Nigeria.

She was said to have wondered at the level of obsession Yinka has for the girl.

On investigation, we learnt that Bisi,though an in-house student of the Odunfa caucus was never a student of Yinka Quadri but that of Alhaji Taiwo Hassan otherwise known as Ogogo or Sir T,only that the two friends run things as one.

Excerpts from the interview; Sir, with the crisis in the ANTP in Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter seems to have come an abrupt full stop, as 13th of June this year was set to be the final judgment at court 10 in Lagos, but information has it that they have postponed it, what do you have to say about the postponement? It wasn't a judgement,it was a pre-trial, and it has to do with the Lagos State Chapter alone. I am the National President and another pre-trial is also in the pipe-line. It is a pre-trial and it just the beginning. Let us agree that it is a pre-trial, but do you see this fracas coming to revelation soonest? Well, we call it pre-trial and it's rather unfortunate that all leaders and elders in the association are greedy, the rift is what we should have been able to settle even without going to court, but it is rather unfortunate that we have some useless elders and I can mention their names like Lere Paimo and Jimoh Aliu,they are the most useless elders that I have ever seen in my life ,they are trouble makers in the association, they are the big fish that are ruining the water even the dangerous people we have in the union, but we are waiting, the court will make the decision.

OutKast To Plan Solo Projects For 2011

Quite a few Outkast projects could be on its way, according to HipHopWired's reports. Not only is the hip hop duo working on the group's next album, but both Andre 3000 and Big Boi are each focusing on their own projects this year too. "Outkast is on track to release a new album by early next year," an industry source with close contact with one of the group members tells HipHopWired. "Both Dre and Big Boi are working on solo projects; they want those out by the end of 2011." Their last musical release (before venturing into movies and working together on a film, "Idlewild," and its soundtrack) was 2003's double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, which packaged two solo albums in a single release. It went on to top charts and won a Grammy Award for 2004 Album of the Year. Are you excited to see what Outkast unleashes next.

Nicki Minaj Mourns The Loss Of Her Cousin

Hip Hop star Nicki Minaj took to Twitter yesterday [July 4] to express sorrow over the death of her cousin, Nicholas Telemaque. “My cousin Nicholas, [who] also goes by Juse or @brolicalcoholic, [was] murdered last night near his home [in] Brooklyn,NY. [He] lived in Brooklyn his whole life. My precious cousin. My baby. Killed last night,” she wrote. According to the New York DailyNews, Telemaque, 27, was shot several times in the torso while leaving club C-PAC in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, New York.  Upon reading the news on Twitter, hundreds of fans immediately tweeted their condolences. Celebs like Jordin Sparks extended their support as well. “Sending love & prayers to you and your family," Sparks tweeted to Minaj. The Queens, New York–bred talent went on to post pics of her beloved cousin on Twitter. Authorities have yet to apprehend any suspects, but are encouraging anyone with information to step forward.
