back with a vengeance. 21 Jump Street, the big screen reboot of the popular TV show, ruled the box office this weekend, taking in a surprising $35 million.
The film, starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, broke a few records as well, according to the Hollywood Reporter: It was the best debut ever for a nonsequel, nonsummer R-rated comedy, as well as one of the best showings for an action-buddy comedy or a television-to-film adaptation.
21 Jump Street also knocked Dr. Suess's The Lorax, which topped the box office for the last two weeks in a row, off its perch. Thanks in no small part to its ethnically and gender-diverse audience: 47 percent nonwhite, and 47 percent female.
There was another familiar face from comedy in theaters this weekend. Will Ferrell's Spanish-language pic Casa de Mi Padre debuted in limited release, opening in just under 400 theaters and grossing an estimated $2.2 million, to come in at No. 9.
Next week, The Hunger Games will take a bite out of everyone's box-office pie. The hotly anticipated event film is expected to set records, and make history, when it releases on Friday.
