Nas proclaims that Life Is Good on his new album due in July, but "good" isn't the same thing
as "easy." In an interview on CNN this morning with Soledad O'Brien and Roland Martin, Nas talked about his revealing new single "Daughters" and some of the difficulties he's faced balancing his responsibilities as both a rapper and the father of a teenage girl.
"Because of the relationship I had with my daughter's mother and being in this business, it kinda took me away from her and took me away from being that parent that was there all the time," he said.
On "Daughters," Nas addresses an incident where his daughter Destiny, 17, caused controversy by posting a photo of condoms to Instagram.
"At that point I realized I wasn't the strictest parent, I'm too loose, I'm too cool wit' her" he says on the song.
On the track and in the interview, Nas said he wishes he would have spent more time with Destiny.
"I did my best, but it wasn't good enough for me. So that's why I did this record," he said on CNN.
Nas said he had something of an identity crisis as a rapper when his daughter was born back in 1994.
"My language regarding women, things, life was a little crazy," he said. "For a minute after my daughter was born, I thought I couldn't write anymore because she's gonna hear this stuff from her dad."
The iconic rapper from Queensbridge isn't through parenting, either. He has a three year old boy with ex-wife Kelis who he says is beginning to talk.
"I wanna be better this time around," Nas said.
