2Pac “Becoming Clean” Photo Shoot

You never know what you’ll find on the Internet. Here’s film from the set of 2Pac’s iconic “Becoming Clean” photo shoot. Shot by photographer David LaChapelle, the photo was taken following Pac’s release from prison. Below is an interview of LaChapelle discussing the shoot.
DM: I feel that a lot of your work emphasises on beauty in people, regardless of colour or size. One of my favourite pieces of your work is “Becoming Clean” with Tupac Shakur amongst others. How was it like work with him?
DL: Tupac was great, he was very sensitive and is truly a good person. I wrote to his mum when he died and she sent me flowers and gave me his last song, “Ghetto Gospel.” When we did the shoot, he had just come out of prison and every shot has a reason, it’s never random, so this was the idea of the photo shoot, him becoming clean. He had given this interview when he was still in prison and he really opened up and was so honest. I had read it and thought it was so truthful so for the work I did with him, there was this idea of washing away and rebirth. And we did another shoot where he posed as a slave on a cotton field. They traced rapping and rhyming to “call and repeat” during slavery time in sugar cane and cotton fields to pass the time. It’s on the Hotel Lachapelle book. Tupac came to the shoot 2 hours early, which was very unusual for a rapper. So I wasn’t ready for the shoot and he didn’t care. He reminded me of my black friends whom I went to art schools with, he was so cool, open-minded and chill. He wasn’t judgemental. Then later on, I found out that he had gone to an art school. He left behind a big bag of socks and underwear because he had just come out from prison and never picked it up. He died shortly after. I still wear his socks sometimes (laughs).

Video: Kanye West Live at Coachella

kanye west
Kanye West performed for nearly two hours at Coachella last night, repping a radically different career phase than we saw in his 2006 mid-day appearance. Chopping up the original “P.Y.T.” sample into “Good Life” was magical, he sported new Air Yeezys, 20 ballerinas, blah blah blah… Our secret favorite moment was suspecting that he used no vocal processing when he climbed the pitch staircase of up-up-ups in “E.T.” Thanks to Dunny Rosé for posting the individual songs;

FERGIE PLANS TO TAKE TIME OFF FROM MUSIC

Fergie

Don’t expect another Black Eyed Peas album anytime soon. Resident Pea Fergie revealed that following the completion of their summer tour, the group will take a break from recording and be “more selective” about the ventures and performances they do.
Fergie Ferg couldn’t help but share her excitement about her upcoming downtime. “I am so excited to take a break. The guys know that I’ve been waiting and it’s time and it’s exciting,” she told the AP. “We’ve had such a great run together and we’re still touring this year, just less, more selective and we’re not working [on an album]. Unless they’re doing one without me.”
And while fans might expect her to put out a follow-up to 2006’s The Dutchess, she’s going to focus more of her time on philanthropic endeavors. “I’m gonna get more into my charities. Charity work. I’m excited to do more of that. Give back, make it not so much about me, me, me, me, me,” she continued. “And having some free time. I have a football team that I’m a limited owner of, the Miami Dolphins, and I want to go to a game.”
Additionally, she’s setting her sights on her Fergie Footwear shoe line, which debuted last week. “Seeing the line progress has been wonderful for me because I get to see how things get tweaked. I get to see the different use of materials and these are all things that I’m learning,” she explained. “You know, I wasn’t trying to come into this and say I’m Christian Louboutin. You know this is a venture for me to express my creativity and to learn.”

MTV Base rallies fanbase to support Nigerian music legend in FELA!

Lagos, 20 April 2011: MTV Base (DStv Channel 322, STV, AIT) is to put its musical muscle and dedicated fan base behind FELA!, the award-winning tale of courage, passion and love that pays tribute to inspirational Nigerian music legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.  The triumphant story, featuring Fela Kuti’s captivating music and the visionary direction and choreography of Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones, comes to Lagos’ New Expo Centre from 20-25 April 2011.

FELA! has been a huge Broadway and West End hit. Produced by Jay Z, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, FELA! tells the true story of the star whose soulful Afrobeat rhythms ignited a generation.  Inspired by his mother, a civil rights champion, Fela devoted his life and music to the struggle for freedom and human dignity.

Commented Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, MTV Networks Africa, “Fela was a true legend of African music who was also recognised in the Legend category at the 2008 MTV Africa Music Awards.  MTV Base is very proud to be associated with the home-coming ofFELA!

MTV Base will be promoting FELA! extensively on its broadcast and social media platforms, encouraging fans to go and witness the musical spectacle, which features the original Broadway cast including Sahr Ngaujah as Fela and Lillias White as his mother, Funmilayo.

Reviewing FELA!, Ben Brantley of The New York Times wrote, “There should be dancing in the streets.  The hot (and seriously cool) energy that comes from the musical gospel preached by the title character of FELA! feels as if it could stretch easily to the borders of Manhattan and then across a river or two.  There has never been anything on Broadway like this production.”  David Cote of Time Out New York, in giving it 5 out of 5 stars enthused, “FELA! is more than a musical; it’s an ecstatic phenomenon.”

In addition to rave reviews, FELA! has won numerous awards and received standing ovations from the likes of Mick Jagger, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Spike Lee, Ben Okri, Janet Jackson, Denzel Washington, Professor Wole Soyinka, Robert De Niro, and Hugh Jackman.  First Lady Michelle Obama and former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan are also reported to have enjoyed the show.

FELA! won three Tony Awards in 2010 and after 14 months on Broadway and three months on stage in London, it stops off in Lagos before heading to The Netherlands and back to London, but is sure to receive the warmest reception in the land of Fela’s birth.

For more information on FELA! visit www.felainlagos.com.
